Optical Liquid Level sensors incorporate an LED and photo-transistor housed within a plastic dome. Operating out of liquid, light from the LED is internally reflected to the photo-transistor. When liquid covers the dome the refractive index at the dome-liquid boundary changes, allowing some LED light to escape. The reduced amount of light received by the photo-transistor switches the output, indicating the presence of liquid.
